The Happy Gigster’s Briggs & Riley Mid-Size Wonder Wheelie is by the front door. Greyness with hotness.

08.44    A brief e-flurry discharged. Front door call for 10.00.

13.35 Heathrow Terminal Three.

The KevinMobile arrived punctually at 10.00…

A straightforward journeying to Heathrow, arriving early, Happy Gigster’s instincts in action. But BA refused to allow me to check my bag more than 2 hours before the flight, so I had 45 minutes in the arrivals area.

Through security, my tuning forks attracting the conventional degree of attention & interest. Now at coffee with computer.

The heat wave is continuing. Drip drip.

Within one minute of everyone being present, Silence came in. I have never known Silence entering this directly here: not quite a whooshing in, more like a switch being thrown: off to on in no time at all.

Online to deal with industry arisings of the exploitative & outrageous kind; my intention is that solutions to the immediate new & arising problems are set in motion before the course begins. From my e-letter to the Island Trading Company…

arriving at the monastery this evening prior to the beginning of the course, i am hoping not to address this until my return to the office on monday 14 july; and declan is fully authorised to act in my absence in his customary position, supervising RF/KC/DGM licensing & copyright matters.

the suggestion of a donation to charity is superb! however, it does not take into account the exemplary & punitive nature of the licensing fee i suggested.

regrettably, i have an unfortunate relationship with UMG in several respects. it is as if UMG does not take my ownership-control of RF/KC copyrights seriously; and/or they are culpably careless (as with mr. most-useless-of-second-tier-lawyers at sanctuary / UMG).

i respect your owning up, but am surprised that UMG did not better inform you of the copyright issues involved.

my difficulty is this: i have been bullied, even threatened, made the subject of undue influence, lied to, and generally had my interests ignored, where not actually trodden on. common decency, fairness & distributive justice are not notions of much consequence in my professional life. the only reason, it seems, that my rights are being taken more seriously nowadays is, that i have put my creative life on hold to deal with infringements & unpaid income; where necessary, through litigation. that is, to be paid for my work as a musician, i have essentially stopped being a musician.

i am sure that you are a decent, honest person; and will be outraged & disappointed to learn that, to be a professional musician, i have to stop being a musician.

as a decent person, i doubt you will have experienced the ongoingness of industry exploitation such as is my working life. one simple question: do you ever wonder if your pay packet will be paid? or, if so, what proportion of the contractually agreed sum you will receive? and if so, when? would you stop work in order to audit your employers & spend a year or so seeking to extract the unpaid portion? several times? if the answer to these questions is no, you cannot conceive of my life. if the answer is yes, you wouldn't be working where you are.

so, much as i would seek to find ways of working with the mainstream industry, in this case UMG / ITC, regrettably i have no trust in the transparency, straightforwardness, equity & accountability of your operations. that is, my goodwill is no longer engaged.

we have two, modified, choices:

i)  payment of a punitive & exemplary license fee to a charity of my designation, of £25,500.00.
ii) pulp the book.

that's it.

On the board, a doorway to a different kind of world entirely…

Guitar Craft House Rules

Honour necessity; honour sufficiency.

Nothing is compulsory, but some things are necessary.

No judgements are made: we accept you as you arrive.

There is no mistake save one, the failure to learn from a mistake.

Freedom from like & dislike is our first major freedom.
Some people here you will like, others not.
Some people will irritate you.
No blame! you will also be irritating them.
Please act towards others with goodwill and with courtesy;
Otherwise, be polite.
Honour the role, respect the person.

You are not asked to accept any direction that violates conscience.
Although we are asked to act from conscience, this assumes the virtue:
to act from conscience is a considerable freedom.

You are not asked to passively accept any idea presented to you.
Rather, you are encouraged to test ideas you find surprising, to establish the veracity of those ideas, or not, for yourself;
and to adopt a position of healthy scepticism, while participating in a spirit of critical goodwill.

Be on the course, to the degree you are able to honourably bear;
for example, listen to music generated within the course;
telephone & access the internet when necessary, or when useful;
avoid listening to, and reading, any non-course material.

Recording during the course is discouraged.

Accept responsibility for your personal space;
and that  part of the public space which you inhabit.

Please stay outside the kitchen, unless you have work there.

If you smoke, please do so outside the buildings.

Please stay within the boundary of the monastery for the duration of the course.
If you require something from outside, please ask the House Manager.

Drug use is incompatible with participation in Guitar Craft.
Although nothing is compulsory, this is necessary.

If Robert considers that any person’s continuing participation is detrimental to
either that person, or the course as a whole, Robert may ask that person to
leave.

If any of this is unacceptable, you are free to leave with a full refund prior to the beginning of the course.

If you decide to stay, you are asked to stay for the duration.
